About Us, History

1986 The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors held a hearing on the issue of adult literacy that directed a Task Force to be formed under the direction of the Superintendent of Education.  A conclusion of this Task Force was the need for a countywide literacy network.
1988 The United Way of Greater Los Angeles committed to fund, form, and develop the Literacy Network of Greater Los Angeles.
1992 Official incorporation of the Literacy Network as a non-profit organization housed by the United Way offices in Los Angeles.  The Literacy Network becomes a Community Care Provider of the United Way of Greater Los Angeles.
1998 Relocation to the Los Angeles Times headquarters.  As a partner to the Los Angeles Times Reading by 9 initiative, the Literacy Network expanded its scope to include the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura.
1999 Inaugural Literacy in Media Awards Event;City Light Pole Banner Campaign
2000 Published Inaugural Edition of That Literacy Phone Book.
2001 Launched Health Literacy Poster Campaign.Usage survey reveals LNGLA tools result in 50,000 referrals/year to literacy programs.
2002 Unveiled “Southern California Reads” in partnership with Verizon.
2003 Launched Literacy@Work:  The L.A. Workforce Literacy project.Referrals per year to literacy programs increase to 85,000.
2004 Published Literacy@Work: The L.A. Workforce Literacy Project, a 198-page Report and 5-Year-Action Plan. The goal of the Plan is to build the foundation for a coordinated system to improve workforce literacy in the following areas: Intake/Skills Assessment; Performance Measurement/Quality Standards; Data Management; Business-Education Partnership Building; and Provider Capacity Building.
2005 First year implementation of Literacy@Work Action Plan including: selection of Core Adult Literacy Provider Group to develop and pilot new programs, and launching of Workforce Volunteer Program and Train-the-Trainer Program. The Literacy Network received a generous grant from Chevron, the Weingart Foundation, and S. Mark Taper Foundation to support these new programs.
2006 Launched Volunteer for Literacy Program, which trains and places volunteers in Service Provider Sites throughout Southern California.
2008 Launched the Motheread and Literacy*AmeriCorps programs. The first annual “A Woman’s Story” luncheon was held.
