About Us, Who We Serve

We serve learners, literacy providers, and employers in the following counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura.

Illiteracy affects us all, and the numbers are overwhelming:

  • Los Angeles has the highest number of undereducated adults of any major metroplitan area of the U.S. – 3.8 million people.
  • 56% of L.A. County residents speak a language other than English at home.
  • 53% of all working-age adults in Los Angeles cannot read well enough to use a bus schedule or complete a job application.
  • 70% of adults with low-literacy skills live in poverty.
  • 75% of unemployed adults have reading and writing difficulties.
