The Literacy Network held its 8th Annual Literacy Summit on March 5, 2009 at the Skirball Cultural Center.  The event was once again a tremendous success.  Close to 150 people who teach adults and children basic reading, writing, math, citizenship, computer skills, financial, and health literacy participated in this dynamic day.

The Summit featured a thought provoking keynote address from Dr. Steven Sample, President of the
University of Southern California, Four Things that are Harder to Teach than Reading. An extremely humorous and motivating closing speech was delivered by Dr. Danny Brassell, Associate Professor in the Teacher Education Department at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Nine enlightening workshop sessions, ranging from “How to Weather the Financial Storm in this Climate” presented by Kent Seton, Seton & Associates to “PR and Media…Working Both Sides of the Street” lead by Meg McDonald, McDonald Media Services, were held throughout the morning.  These workshops provided not only literacy teaching practices, but also information that is pertinent to all non-profit organizations.

The day included a Provider Fair, where attending organizations could showcase the work that they do, breakfast, lunch, and plenty of networking.  According to one attendee, “the entire event was nothing but a joy…it exceeded my expectations.”
