Welcome Literacy*AmeriCorps 2009-2010 Members
The Literacy Network is excited to welcome our new group of AmeriCorps members for the 2009-2010 year! The Corps is an exceptional group of seven young people who are bright and driven to serve and have selflessly dedicated a year to community service through the program. They have come from all over the country to serve and are already busy working in the community.
We are proud to have participated in the inaugural National Service Day on September 11 in remembrance of the terrorist attacks on our nation. As a Corps, our members volunteered at the Venice Family Clinic in Santa Monica for a clean-up day and worked alongside Youth Build Gardena to clean, organize, and revitalize the clinic. However, this is only the first service project the group will be undertaking this year.; next up, Ketchum Downtown YMCA’s annual Stair Climb to the Top.
Most of the members time will be spent as literacy tutors , working with learners to increase language skills. The core will be completing their service time at some of our partner agencies: The Bresee Foundation, St. Margaret’s Center, ABC Learn Inc., Chrysalis, and Reading to Kids.
