Volunteer for Literacy
Volunteer for Literacy is a volunteer tutor program that serves adult learners in local literacy service sites. The goal of this initiative is to strengthen and build the capacity of literacy providers in the Greater Los Angeles community by providing volunteer support to programs that help improve basic literacy skills of adults and the workforce literacy skills of job seekers, incumbent workers, and adult learners.
The Literacy Network of Greater Los Angeles:
- recruits volunteers from the community and corporate sectors
- trains volunteers to be literacy tutors
- conducts background checks on all volunteers
- co-manages volunteers with the literacy service sites
- provides additional tutor trainings and support throughout the year
Volunteer Tutors
Individuals interested in volunteering as a tutor, working with adult learners, must demonstrate commitment and consistent participation in order to ensure the overall success of the program.
Volunteer Tutor minimum requirements:
- Able to tutor for 2 hours weekly for a minimum of 6 months
- At least 18 years of age
- English proficient
- Able to provide own transportation to literacy service site
- Willing to abide by the program policies and code of conduct
- Willing to participate in an initial volunteer training
- Willing to complete monthly volunteer reflection logs

Literacy Service Provider
The Literacy Network of Greater Los Angeles works with literacy providers throughout the Greater Los Angeles County.
A literacy service site may be any of the following listed that offers literacy instruction to adults:
- Adult school
- Public Library
- Community college
- WorkSource Center
- Community-based organization
